Here are some tree silhouettes my students created while they were waiting to use the hairdryer for the last crayon project, or if they finished early. Students painted the trees with black India ink. Then, for the negative space, they created various gradients, blending colors with pastels. Some students were very inventive and experiments with other subject matter instead of trees!

After we were learning some of the main color vocabulary, the students worked in pairs to develop a design that included a silhouette or gray scale image and the 12 colors on the color wheel in the proper order, in crayons. They glued the crayons on, and used hairdryers to melt the crayons using a few different techniques. Some students who finished early created another piece using other crayon colors.
Each year, I like to have my students create a project in celebration of Chinese New Year. After learning about the purpose of this holiday, the dragon dance, and the other festivities that are part of it, the kids made these Chinese New Year paper puppets.
I am excited to be back for another semester with new students and new lessons! The students spent the first few days designing and personalizing their sketchbook covers. Then, we looked at the work of several contemporary scratch board artists, including Ann Ranlett, while learning to create visual texture and volume in their piece. Here is what the young artists came up with! Some of them painted their pieces with colored inks once they finished scratching them out.
